What is Acupuncture ?
How Acupuncture Works: Restoring Balance and Enhancing Wellness
Acupuncture, grounded in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), promotes health by harmonizing the opposing forces of yin and yang within the life energy, or “Qi” (pronounced “chi”). TCM believes that imbalances in Qi disrupt well-being, leading to illness. Through 361 acupuncture points along meridians, or energy pathways, acupuncture restores balance by precisely inserting needles at targeted points. This process stimulates receptive fields that influence sensory neurons, which can positively affect pain response and boost blood flow to specific areas.
Acupuncture provides a natural, low-risk option for managing chronic pain and pairs effectively with other therapies to support holistic health.
Conditions Treated with Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a versatile treatment option that can address a wide range of health issues, including:
- Nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy or post-surgery
- Dental pain
- Fibromyalgia
- Headaches, including tension and migraines
- Labor pain
- Lower back, neck, and knee pain
- Osteoarthritis
- Menstrual cramps
- Respiratory issues, such as allergic rhinitis
- Tennis elbow
- Weight management
- Anti-aging support
What to Expect During and After Acupuncture Treatment
Acupuncture points are located throughout the body, and sometimes the best points for treatment may be far from the specific area of discomfort. Your acupuncturist will explain the planned treatment areas and may ask you to remove clothing in certain areas; a gown, towel, or sheet will be provided for privacy. You'll lie comfortably on a padded table as the procedure begins, involving the following steps:
- Needle Insertion: Very thin needles are inserted at various depths at targeted points. Most people experience little to no discomfort; some may feel a mild ache when the needle reaches the desired depth. A typical session involves 5 to 20 needles.
- Needle Manipulation: To enhance the treatment, the practitioner may gently manipulate, twirl, or apply heat or mild electrical pulses to the needles.
- Needle Removal: After about 10 to 15 minutes, the needles are removed with minimal or no discomfort.
Post-Treatment Experience
Following the session, some clients feel deeply relaxed, while others feel energized. However, not everyone responds to acupuncture, and if you don’t see improvement in a few weeks, this approach may not be ideal for your needs.
Expected Results
While it can be challenging to measure the exact benefits, many clients report relief from various painful conditions with acupuncture. Studies suggest that the treatment may be most effective for those who believe in its potential benefits. With minimal side effects, acupuncture offers a low-risk option for those seeking alternatives to conventional pain management methods.
